Cyril Barber entered UTS in 1910. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service and was sent to Dunkirk, France, to complete his training. He was killed during his final test on gunnery when his aeroplane slipped on a turn, went into a nose-dive, and crashed. He was buried with full naval honours in the Coudekerque Cemetery, part of the Dunkirk Town Cemetery, where his fellow UTS students Herbert Mackarsie Cumming and Frederick Henry Anderson are also buried.
